Game Summary:
RPI jumped out to a four goal lead, and never looked back, as they
crushed the Division III Dutchmen 12-4 in the opening round of their own
tournament. Bruce Coles led RPI with a hat trick and an assist, while Dalton
Menhall had a hat trick for Union. The Engineers were just too quick for the
Dutchmen. Union played a game a lot like they usually do, but the results were
much different. For example, Union has a tendency to try to set up for the
perfect shot, especially on power plays. But that didn't work against RPI, as
they continually broke up passes and ended up with 2 on 1's the other way.
This game showed that the Dutchmen, considering a move up to Division I
next year, can not yet consistently compete with the better teams in Division I.

Game Summary:
Union quickly shook off the thrashing by RPI the night before to come
back to defeat the Nanooks of Alaska-Fairbanks. Tim Cregan took a pass from
Craig Ferrero at 0:54 to give the Dutchmen the lead for good. The assist
extended Ferrero's scoring streak to 20 games. Union added 2 more goals in the
period, one on the power play and one shorthanded.
The only scoring in the second period was scored by Alaska-Fairbanks,
and the Nanooks pulled to within 1 41 seconds into the 3rd. Union goalie Jim
Helkie benefitted from 2 posts with the score 3-2. Craig Ferrero gave the
Dutchmen the 2 goal cushion with a shorthanded goal at 11:43. Alaska-Fairbanks
kept the pressure on, but Helkie protected the lead, ending up with 37 saves.
Union sealed the victory with an empty net goal by Greg Eccleston at 19:08.
Goalie Jim Helkie cleared the puck into the corner to Eccleston, who banged it
off the boards to clear the zone. Helkie picked up his first career assist as
the puck hit the center of the open net at the other end of the ice.

The Dutchmen showed that they can compete with some Division I teams,
although they are certainly not ready for teams like RPI.

Union improves to 7-3-1 overall, while AF falls to 7-10.
