To my delight, Tim Hogan played a strong game, particularly on the
offensive end. I've been less than pleased with Hogan's play for
the past three years, but it appears he's becoming more of a factor
at both ends of the ice. Knuble's second goal was Hogan's play all
the way, hustling to squeeze the puck in at the blueline when Kent
began to break out, then beating the defense in and hitting Knuble
with a perfect pass which Mike blew past Scott Shaw.

Also, I can't remember a more diminutive pair of dufflebags than
Lacasse (5-7,155) and Shaw (5-10,165 -- yeah, right!, Shaw isn't 5-
10 with skates on).

And, with the announcements of OSU 2 MSU 0 and OSU 5 MSU 3, it
marked the first time in ages that "Go Buckeyes" could be heard in
Ann Arbor. :-)

Goaltenders: FSU Lisko UM Shields

Attendance: 7498

Three Stars: 1 UM Steve Shields
             2 FSU Craig Lisko
             3 UM Rick Willis

With the victory, Red Berenson becomes the winningest coach in
school history and Michigan clinches at least a tie for the CCHA
title!

Steve Shields and Craig Lisko both were outstanding. The first
Michigan goal was a disputed one, with Lisko apparently making the
save but the referee ruled that he had crossed the goal line in so
doing. The goal light never came on. Lisko protested vehemently,
to no avail. It was at the opposite end of rink from me so I
couldn't tell, but a couple of fans I spoke to said that it was
under his leg, which was across the line. Regardless, Lisko shook
it off and played a great game, rarely giving up any rebounds that
could result in scoring chances. On the other end, Shields also
stood tall. Actually, he stood about five inches taller :-), and
he needed his entire 6-3 frame to make one save. After a series of
shots, Shields was down and the puck was sliding behind him for the
corner of the net. But he extended himself just enough to get a
piece of it with his stick and tip it wide. Since the loss to
Michigan State, Shields is 6-0-0 with 7 goals against. He is now
looking like a Hobey Baker finalist.

FSU defenseman John Gruden also turned in a fantastic performance
that won't be seen in the box score. Gruden just sealed his spot
on my All-CCHA first team. He should receive some All-America
consideration at the end of the season.

Stat Update:
               GM G A PTS
David Oliver 30 21 38 59
Brian Wiseman 29 13 45 58

               POS GM PIM
Steve Shields G 26 16
David Oliver RW 30 14

Yes, Shields has out-penaltied Oliver to this point.

And, this was Old Timers Weekend, including the 30th reunion of
the 1964 national champions. When the 1963-64 team was introduced
on ice before the Ferris game, the UM student section broke into a
chant of "You're Number One! You're Number One!" It may be the
coolest thing I remember coming from the student section. I
saluted the old timers and the students.

From U. MAGAZINE...
REINSTATED: Giego, the Ottawa U. mascot ousted in 1971. Chief
Charles E. Dawes, a university trustee and leader of the Ottawa
tribe, says he is proud to have Giego back. His tribe plans to
provide a buckskin to be worn at football games.

[Always nice to hear from the other side on the great(?) Native
American PC debate.]
