In today's Bangor Daily News was an article by Larry Mahoney. The
article was about UMaine's (slim) chances for selection to the 12-team
tournament, but I'll only quote and paraphrase a few passages to do with
the selection in general ...

NCAA tournament committee member and NMU coach Rick Comley said that the
games played by Maine will be considered rather than the results due to
forfeit, except that the Tory forfeits might be treated differently from
the Tardif forfeits because Tardif's eligibility has been re-established.

Quoting now ...

(Comley said) "So, depending upon the committee's recommendation, Maine
will be either 17-15-4 or 14-18-4.

"Maine will be one of the 23 or 24 teams being looked at (for the
12-team tournament)," said Comley.

The four league tournament champs receive automatic berths to the NCAA
Tournament and one other team from each of the four leagues is also
selected. That leaves a logjam for the final four spots.

The criteria includes the ratings power index of winning percentage and
strength of schedule, head-to-head competition, common opponents, record
over the last 20 games, and record against teams under consideration.

"There is also a clause that says the committee can evaluate the
eligibility and availability of student-athletes," said Comley.

Maine has regained the services of Peter Ferraro and Chris Ferraro from
the U.S. Olympic team.

The members of the committee are Comley, Boston University coach Jack
Parker, St. Lawrence coach Joe Marsh and Bowling Green athletic
director Jack Gregory.
