BG BROOMS BLUE

Bowling Green lived up to its pre-season expectations last weekend
as it swept NCAA #1 ranked Michigan in a home-and-away series.
Friday, the Falcons won at home 7-4 and on Saturday they completed
the sweep at Yost Arena, winning 4-3. Freshman Brian Holzinger
earned CCHA Player-of-the-Week honors for his efforts, scoring 4
goals (including a hat trick), netting both game-winners, and
earning first-star selection both evenings.

In the first contest, the Wolverines' rough play backfired as the
BG short-handed squad stood tall. They held the potent Michigan
offense to only 1 of 7 with the man advantage, while adding a
shorthanded marker themselves. BGSU went 2-7 on the power play.
Goaltending was also a key difference: Falcon Will Clarke stopped
32 (many from point-blank range) but U of M's Steve Shields only
saved 17 of 23 shots. The BGSU barrage was led by Holzinger, whose
pair of third period goals were instrumental in stopping the Michigan
comeback. Sean Pronger added a pair for BG. Four different Wolverines
tallied.

Saturday, Holzinger scored only once, but he made it a big one. He
broke a 3-3 tie with less than 3 minutes to go to give the Falcons
the victory. After Denny Felsner put Michigan ahead 3-2 mid-way
through the final period, Peter Holmes tied it up on a defensive
mistake by the Maize and Blue. The line of Brett Harkins-Dan
Bylsma-Jim Solly netted BG's first two goals. Dan Stiver scored a
goal and an assist for Michigan. Both power plays were ineffective,
with BG going 0-8 and UM 1-7. The Falcons managed 25 shots on Chris
Gordon and the Wolverines put 22 on Clarke.

The 4-point weekend pushes BGSU (7-15-4 overall and 6-14-4 in the
league) 3 points ahead of Ohio State for the final play-off spot
and only 2 points behind 7th place Ferris. Michigan falls to third
in the CCHA (14-6-3, 20-6-3 overall) but is only 2 points behind
front-running Michigan State and Lake Superior. Bowling Green and
Michigan will be meeting again in less than 2 weeks from tonight.
