Boston University played their first game of the season, albeit
an exhibition. Attendance was poor considering it was the
first chance to see BU play this year and the game was free.
Having the game on Channel 68 may have had contributed to the
low attendance. Those that did attend appeared to have a good
time and saw an exciting, if not well played game. New
Brunswick was playing the second three straight games, having
beaten Cape Breton 9-2 at home on Friday. After the game they
bused to Orono, ME for the night, and traveled from Orono to
Boston on Saturday. On Sunday afternoon they played Boston
College, before returning home. The effects of travel showed
in the first period, but UNB recovered and played much better
in the second and third periods. In goal for UNB was freshman
Frank LeBlanc, MVP of the Maritime's Tier 2 Junior A last year.
He played extremely well, keeping the Reds in the game during
the first period. Another freshman for the Reds was the best
player on the ice, Luke Naylor, a speedy little left wing, who
scored four goals.

BU came out strongly in the first period, but seemed to wear
down and play poorly in the second. The Terriers recovered
somewhat in the third, holding their own against the Varsity
Reds. BU played all three goals, Derek Herlofsky in the first
period, Shawn Ferullo in the second and Tom Noble in the third.
The worst news for BU was that Jay Pandolfo aggravated a groin
pull late in the first period and did not return. Hopefully,
he will recover and be healthy for the opener at RPI in two
weeks.

BU started the game strongly, outplaying UNB and causing them
to take a number of penalties early. The Terriers made the
Reds pay dearly for the penalties, converting 3 of their 4
opportunities. BU's first goal was a 5-on-4, and the next two
were 5-on-3 situations. The Terriers' third goal was a fine
individual effort by Chris O'Sullivan, as he skated around a
defenseman, in on Leblanc and shot it past his stick side into
the net. BU then scored even strength to make the it 4-0, and
the game seemed to be well in hand for the Terriers. That was
not to be, as some late BU penalties allowed UNB back into the
game. First BU went down 2 men, and UNB executed a perfect
weak side setup, with Luke Naylor scoring into an open net.
Still on the powerplay the Reds repeated the weak side setup
just 1:31 later, and a still uncovered Luke Naylor again scored
into an open net. The period ended with BU leading UNB 4-2.

The second period stared with the Reds playing much better and
throwing BU off their game. UNB scored at 7:22, as Scott
Muscutt took a pass all alone in front of the BU net and shot
the puck past Shawn Ferullo. The tying goal came on a scramble
in front of the BU net, as the Terriers could not clear the
puck before the Reds knocked it home for the goal. Another
individual effort, this time by Bill Pierce gave BU back the
lead 5-4, as he stole the puck in center ice and blasted a hard
shot past a screened LeBlanc at 16:45.

The third period was a mixed affair as BU scored two goals
sandwiched between two goals by UNB. Luke Naylor tried the
score at 5-5 only 1:15 into the third as he took a pass and
shot the puck over Tom Noble's left shoulder after Noble had
dropped to his knees. At 5:15 Steve Thornton stole the puck at
center ice, skated in alone, faked a shot that fooled LeBlanc,
who dropped to his knees. He then skated around the net and
scored with a wraparound goal. The Terriers picked up the pace
after the goal, and at 10:11 Bob Lachance scored again for BU
to make it 7-5. The game was up and down after that until
17:03, when Luke Naylor scored his fourth goal on a beautiful
breakaway. He got behind the Terrier defensemen and received a
great onside pass, as he skated in on Noble. He faked twice
as he cut across the front of the net and made a prefect shot
through Noble's legs. BU hung on for the remaining 2:57 as UNB
put pressure on for the tying goal.

matter, as the game was an exhibition. Furthermore, I am not a
