With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the Post-
Season Tournament contests. For Contest #1, in which the later rounds
were weighted more than the earlier ones, the overall winner is...
Nathan Hampton
whose total of 185 points was six better than runner-up Bill Groskreutz.
Congratulations to Nathan on his awesome prognosticating skills; here's
where I always grumpily mention something about blind luck, but as we all
know, luck is the residue of -- well, more luck. Anyway, congrats to
Nathan!
As for the individual conference winners...
The ECAC race went to Sean Keller with 56 points.
Scott Kaplan took the top spot in Hockey East with 37 points.
Craig Roberts' 30 points was good for first place in the WCHA.
Nathan Hampton took top honors in the NCHC with 41 points.
The Atlantic Hockey race ended in a three-way tie for first among William
Sangrey, Richard Vehlow, and Craig Roberts. William and Richard remained
tied after the first tiebreaker, but William's total goals prediction was
four points closer, winning him the second tiebreaker and the crown.
Also ending in a tie for the top spot was the Big Ten race, among Wayne
Smith, Bill Krebs, Bill Groskreutz, and myself (!) Wayne and I remained
tied after the first tiebreaker, but I won the second tiebreaker by six
points.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Note that since the NCHC consolation game ended in a tie, anyone who
picked North Dakota or Denver to win the consolation was awarded 2 points.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 4-1) to be 2-1,
you would get two points; if you picked 2-0, you would get three points;
and if you picked 6-4, you would get five points. Obviously, the lower the
point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For Atlantic Hockey, the championship game score was 7-4, and the total
goals scored in the tournament was 104.
For the Big Ten, the championship game score was 5-3, and the total goals
scored in the tournament was 37.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win. It should be noted that the USCHO staff did
not pick the games all at once, the way the rest of us did, which in some
cases was especially advantageous.
