LATE GOAL GIVES CLARKSON THE VICTORY
Sand Lake’s David Evans scores game-winner for 3-2 win

Sand Lake native David Evans scored on a rebound from just outside the crease with just 4:49 remaining in the third period to give the Clarkson men’s hockey team a 3-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) contest before a crowd of 4,397 at the Houston Field House in Troy, NY.

Evans, who played scholastically at the Field House for the Capital District Selects, slid the rebound of a Kent Huskins shot past RPI goaltender Nathan Marsters and into the net. The victory improved the Golden Knights’ record to 2-2-2 in the ECAC and 7-6-3 overall. The 12th-ranked Engineers, meanwhile, fall to 4-4-1 in the league and 10-6-1 overall.

Clarkson stormed out to an early two-goal lead when Huskins, a
defenseman who leads the Golden Knights’ in scoring (3 goals, 15
assists), drilled a rebound from the right faceoff circle past starting goaltender Kevin Kurk at the 1:52 mark. Just 1:21 later, Murray Kuntz found a rebound of his own in the same faceoff circle and beat Kurk for a two-goal advantage. Kuntz’s goal, his sixth of the season, chased Kurk, who was replaced by Marsters.

The Engineers, who had numerous scoring chances but failed to hit the net early in the first period, pulled to within one goal late in the stanza when sophomore Marc Cavosie scored on a high wristshot from the right faceoff circle. Cavosie, who recently rejoined the Engineers after a stint with the U.S. Junior National Team, then tied the game when he deflected the puck past goalie Mike Walsh for his 11th of the season. A native of nearby Cohoes, NY, Cavosie was parked in front of the net when a Scott Basiuk shot knocked off him and past the sophomore netminder. Junior Jim Henkel also earned an assist on the goal, his second of the night.

The score remained 2-2 until late in the third period when Evans, a junior, beat Marsters to break the deadlock. Walsh (1-0-1), who was making just his second start of the season, finished with 15 saves for the win while Marsters (7-5-0) stopped 28 shots in the loss. Kurk made three saves before being replaced.

The Engineers, who have now lost two straight games for the first time this season, are right back at the Houston Field House on Saturday night when they’ll host St. Lawrence in another ECAC matchup. Clarkson will be at Union, who lost to the Saints, 5-2, on Friday. Both games will begin at 7pm.
