All the speculation about the possible matchups has me thinking
playoffs. ***Does anyone have any Worcester Regional playoff ticket
info?***
Some thoughts on possible ramifications of the ECAC's current 4-way
logjam at the top:
-The ECAC finish should be one of the wildest in memory. My apologies
to the Clarkson fan who hopes that the Knights will have first place
wrapped up by the time they play Cornell, but I don't think anything
will be decided until the games of 3/1 are completed. It looks
somewhat similar to 1990, when RPI jumped from 5th to 2nd in the
conference with a final-weekend sweep of #2 Cornell and #1 Colgate.
-With Vermont, Clarkson, and Cornell at #3, #5 and #9 in the PWR, the
ECAC could possibly have 4 teams in the NCAAs for the first time in
who knows how long. If RPI were to take the regular season title or
if they or another team not currently in the top four won the
tournament, and if Cornell's late-season and playoff performance were
to keep them high up in the PWR it could be conceivable that the NCAA
could take all four. Has the ECAC ever had 4 teams in the Tournament
since the 12-team format has been in place (or since the Hockey East
split, whichever came more recently)?
-A general question: how much is it possible to move around in the
PWR once the season gets to this point? Does Cornell have a decent
chance to earn the right to play in Worcester rather than out West, or
are BU, UNH, UVM, and Clarkson virtually immovable? If they did pass
BU in the PWR, what are the chances they'd stay East in favor of the
host school (and biggest draw) for the Worcester Regional?
-A Union/RPI best-of-three would cement this rivalry in the minds of
all the fans. There was a bunch of hype in the local papers in 1994
when the Engineers were #3 and the Dutchmen were #6, but the rivalry
really hadn't come of age yet (although it felt pretty strong at the
time). Given another chance, a best-of-three between these teams
would put it over the top. A meeting in Lake Placid would be even
better, though... :-)
Enough rambling. Please e-mail privately any info about tix for the
Worcester Regionals. Thanks.
