And a long time ago before that, the games were against ECAC teams. The games were usually around the holidays. There were no tournaments at that time, which seem to have supplanted the formal interlocked schedules. The only thing formal interlocking left in Minnesota's schedule is the College Hockey Showcase mentioned below. Minnesota still manages to schedule two games against eastern teams around the end of the calendar year. Sometimes it is the same team, sometimes it is two different teams.

Subject: Re: Addendum to WCHA at Lynah or Been there done that
Subject becomes "Addendum to WCHA at Lynah or Been There Done That"
because a decade or so ago the WCHA had a CONTRACT with Hockey East that the
member schools had to play each other -- HE at WCHA and WCHA at HE. They
dropped the idea because the travel was too expensive. The Hockey showcase
is the same idea is between CCHA and WCHA but on a much smaller scale since
it is just Michigan State and Michigan (CCHA) vs. Minnesota and Wisconsin
(WCHA) and people like to call this the Big - 10 series.
