Previous posts have pointed out the difference between the different
levels of the SUNY system (4 year Universities: Buffalo, Albany,
Stony Brook, Binghamton; 4 year colleges: ie. Buffalo St., Fredonia,
Potsdam, Plattsburgh, Oswego and several others; and 2 year community colleges:
Erie, Hudson Valley, North Country and others.
Here at the University at Albany (SUNY-Albany) the majority
of sports have made the jump this past year to D-II from D-III.
Quite frankly, the teams are struggling to make the adjustment. In
fact, the football already had to forfeit 2 of last year's 3
wins for using an academically inelegible player (oops!).
SUNY-Albany does not currently have a varsity hockey team but does have
a club team. I'm fairly confident that the current New York
State budgetary problems together with gender equity issues will
make it very hard for SUNY-Albany to ever field a varsity hockey
team. As for a move to D-I in other sports (like they've already
done at University at Buffalo), that is still in the
planning stages.
