CCHA CO-PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK: Lake Superior junior defenseman Mark Astley and
Western Michigan freshman goaltender Craig Brown have been named Co-CCHA
Players-of-the-Week for the second weekend of the 1990-91 season.
Astley, a 6-0, 180 lb. native of Calgary, Alberta had five points (3G, 2A) in
the Lakers win and tie at Michigan State. In Friday's contest, Astley had two
goals and one assist, while in Saturday's game he had the game-winning goal
and one assist. He was drafted by Buffalo in the June 1989 Entry Draft.
Brown, a 5-11, 170 lb. native of Scarborough, Ontario recorded his first two
collegiate wins in the Broncos home-and-home sweep of UIC. In Friday's game
in Kalamazoo, Brown stopped 29 of 30 shots and held the Flames to an 0-for-5
on the power play. Saturday at UIC, Brown made 25 saves while allowing two
goals. For the series, Brown stopped 54 of 57 for an .947 saves percentage.
This is the first time for both players that they have been named CCHA
P-O-T-W.
[Keith's honorable mention: Mike Bales of OSU, who stopped 84 shots on the
weekend for a 93.3 saving percentage.]

October 27 at Lawson Ice Arena (4,000). Coaches: WMU - Bill Wilkinson
(162-154-18 in his ninth year). MSU - Ron Mason (322-141-17 in his 12th year
at MSU, 611-251-31 in his 25th year overall). Series: The Spartans lead
31-7-1, with MSU winning all four games last season. Last Meeting: Jan. 13
at WMU, MSU won 6-3 behind 25 saves by Mike Gilmore. Last Meeting at MSU:
Jan. 12, the Spartans recorded an 11-2 win with Rob Woodward tallying a hat
trick.
UIC at Michigan, October 26-27 at Yost Ice Arena (8,100). Saturday's contest
will be taped by PASS for airing on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Coaches: UIC - Larry
Pedrie (0-4-0 in his first year). MICH - Red Berenson (110-124-12 in his
seventh season). Series: Pedrie spent the last three years as an assistant
under Red Berenson at Michigan. Prior to working at Michigan, Pedrie was an
assistant at UIC under former coach Val Belmonte. Michigan holds a slim
16-13-1 lead after winning all four games last year. Last Meeting: Dec.
15-16, 1989 at Michigan, as the Wolverines swept the Flames by the scores of
6-3 and 13-4. Denny Felsner had five goals in the series and Tim Keough
recorded both wins for 'M'.
Bowling Green vs. Ohio State, October 26 at OSU Ice Rink (1,410) and October
27 at BGSU Ice Arena (5,000). Coaches: BGSU - Jerry York (282-169-21 in his
12th year at BGSU, 407-256-24 in his 19th year overall). OSU - Jerry Welsh
(291-260-39 in his 16th year). Series: The Falcons lead 65-30-2, having won
seven of the last 10 meetings vs. the Buckeyes. Last Meeting: Mar. 2-3 at
BGSU in the CCHA Quarter-finals, with Bowling Green winning 7-1 and 6-5 to
advance to Joe Louis Arena. Last Meeting at OSU: Dec. 16, 1989, with the
Falcons victorious by a 6-5 score.
Miami at Ferris State, October 26-27 at Ewigleben Ice Arena (2,573). Coaches:
Miami - George Gwozdecky (14-26-4 in his second season at Miami, 81-56-6
overall in his fifth year). FSU - Bob Mancini (1-1-2 in his first year).
Series: The Bulldogs have a 21-12-3 advantage, with FSU winning last year's
season series with a 2-0-2 mark vs. Miami. Last Meeting: Jan. 12-13 at
Miami, with FSU winning both games, 3-1 and 8-7, as Rod Taylor had three goals
on the weekend. Last Meeting at FSU: Nov. 3-4, 1989, the teams skated to a
pair of overtime ties, 4-4 and 2-2.
Maine at Lake Superior, October 26-27 at Norris Center Arena (3,250). Coaches:
Maine - Shawn Walsh (145-106-8 in six years in Orono). LSSU - Jeff Jackson
(3-0-1 in his first year). Series: The series in even at 1-1-1. Last
Meeting: The Black Bears defeated (7-3) and tied (5-5 OT) Lake Superior at
home last season on Jan. 19-20. In the only prior meeting, the Lakers skated
to a 6-3 win in a 1988 NCAA Semi-Final contest in Lake Placid.

28 NHL Scouts attended the Michigan at Bowling Green game on Thursday, October
18th. Former Toronto Maple Leaf great George "Chief" Armstrong quipped "we
have enough people here for an old-timers game."
Dowd scores 200th career point: Lake Superior senior center Jim Dowd had
three points (one goal, two assists) on the weekend to bring his career total
to 202 points (68 goals, 134 assists).
FSU's Taylor continues scoring parade: Rod Taylor, a senior for the Bulldogs,
has scored 28 goals in the last 29 games for FSU dating back to last season.
Taylor had a goal on Friday, but was blanked on the scoresheet Saturday.
Jones tallies first career "hat": Western Michigan junior right wing Keith
Jones had three goals on Friday in a Bronco 4-1 win. In Saturday's 4-2 WMU
victory, Jones had three assists. His three goals Friday gave him his first
career hat trick.
