Some notes on the games involving Team USA last weekend:

Germany 4, United States 4 (tie)
Well, Team USA was probably a little embarrassed about ending up with a
tie against a Germany team that had lost its previous five games by an
average of almost five goals. Anyway, Danton Cole scored twice for the
United States, and Dave Tretowicz recorded a pair of assists. With
about four minutes left in the game and the score tied at 4-4, Cole had
a chance at the game-winner, but his shot flew wide.

United States 2, Finland 1
As I predicted earlier (plug, plug), this game wound up determining
fourth place and a shot at a medal. The first two goals were scored
early in the opening period, as Kevin Miller put Team USA on the board
at the 2:11 mark and Finland's Christian Ruuttu tallied a minute and a
half later. That was all until 11:49 of the third period, when Todd
Krygier (Hartford) scored the game-winner and put the US in the medal
round for the first time in six years.

The medal round takes place this week at Turku, and the schedule is:

Monday, 4/29:
     [5] Finland vs. [8] Germany
     [6] Czechoslovakia vs. [7] Switzerland

Tuesday, 4/30:
[1] Soviet Union vs. [4] United States
     [2] Sweden vs. [3] Canada

Wednesday, 5/1:
     Czechoslovakia vs. Germany
     Finland vs. Switzerland

Thursday, 5/2:
     Sweden vs. United States
     Soviet Union vs. Canada

Friday, 5/3:
     Switzerland vs. Germany
     Finland vs. Czechoslovakia

Saturday, 5/4:
     Canada vs. United States
     Soviet Union vs. Sweden

LET'S GO RED!!

"The referee is stopping the fight! I can't believe this!! Whatever happened
to... the kind of ref that would let fighters go at it until one guy was flat
on his back -- out cold."
"They're working in the National Hockey League."
