Providence hockey DEFEATED AT #14 uMASS LOWELL, 6-1
LOWELL, MASS. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated at
#14-ranked UMass Lowell, 6-1, on Friday, March 1 in the final regular-season
HOCKEY EAST contest for both teams.
UMass Lowell got on the scoreboard first when senior forward Yorick Treille
tallied just 3:29 into the contest. Laurent Meunier and Peter Hay assisted
on the goal after the Friars turned the puck over behind. Hay tipped the
puck to Meunier who fed Treille in front of the goal. Treille beat
Providence freshman goaltender David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.), who
earned the start when junior All-American goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow
Grass, Sask.) left his catching glove in Providence.
The River Hawks increased the lead with four goals in the second period.
Lowell's Treille scored the game's second goal, redirecting a pass from Ed
McGrane on the power-play just 32 seconds into the second period. Laurent
Meunier gave the River Hawks a 3-0 lead at 2:48 before the Friars finally
scored. PC junior co-captain Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) scored the
Providence goal at 9:39 when he converted a feed from freshman defenseman
Jeff Mason (Easthampton, Mass.) and freshman forward David Carpentier
(Faribault, Minn.). But Lowell answered the Friars' tally, scoring two more
goals of their own to go into the second intermission with a 5-1 lead. Mark
Concannon put the River Hawks ahead, 4-1, just after the power-play had
expired and Tom Rouleau jammed the puck between Cacciola's pad and the goal
pipe with 11 seconds remaining for Lowell's fifth score of the night. Peter
Hay scored the game's final goal on the power play for Lowell with 2:54
remaining in the contest.
Cacciola made 24 saves in the loss for the Friars while Lowell's Jimi St.
John recorded 18 saves.
The Friars return to action next weekend when they play in the HOCKEY EAST
Quarterfinals at either New Hampshire, Boston University or Maine. Final
seeding will be decided after Saturday's league games.
