This is true. The 89-90 College Hockey Record Manual has ND playing
in the WCHA for 10 years, from 71-72 to 80-81. The Irish had an
overall record of 135-150-13 during that time. Here's how they
    did each year:

    71-72 10-16-0 8th 14-20-0
    72-73 19-9-0 2nd 23-13-1
    73-74 11-16-1 8th 14-20-2
    74-75 10-19-3 7th 13-22-3
    75-76 15-15-2 5th 19-17-2
    76-77 19-10-3 2nd 22-13-3
    77-78 12-19-1 9th 15-20-1
    78-79 17-14-1 5th 18-19-1
    79-80 13-14-1 5th 18-20-1
    80-81 9-18-1 9th 13-21-2

Erik is right about those four leaving the WCHA after 80-81,
and they all did join the CCHA for the following season.
ND remained a member of the CCHA for 2 seasons before dropping
    out.

Record manual to the rescue again:

The WCHA was known as the MIHL from 1951-52 through 1952-53, the
WIHL from 1953-54 through 1957-58, and the WCHA from 1959-60 to the
present. The WIHL collapsed in March, 1958 due to recruiting and
scheduling conflicts, and the teams for that year are listed
as the "NCAA West Division I". Some teams had played as many as
22 league games and some had played as few as 11.
