Friday, Jan. 17, 1996 - Potsdam, NY
Friday night saw a showdown between two top ten teams. Number 5 Maine and
#10 Clarkson squared off in what would seem to be a hellava hockey game.
The Golden Knights though playing well early on quickly found themselves
behind 1-0 when Maine scored just 2:51 into the first period. However, the
Golden Knights coming off two bad losses last weekend (6-4 to Colgate and
6-3 to Cornell) quickly rebounded and scored the periods remaining three goals enroute to a 3-1 lead at the end of one period of
play.
Both teams played very well in the second and third periods, with the only
scoring coming on a third period goal by Steve Kariya (Paul's brother),
to make it a 3-2 game. Steve's goal came with about 10 mins to play in
the third period. Clarkson held off a fierce Maine third period attack
which saw the Black Bears outshoot the Golden Knights 13-5 in the final
period of play. However, Goalie Dan Murphy stayed strong and solid in the
nets for the Golden Knights as the game ended with a 3-2 CU victory.
