Sad, but true. After growing up in Boston, living and breathing hockey,
then relocating to Dallas found ot just how little people in the south
know or care about hockey for the most part. Sure there are pockets of
transplanted northerns who gather at the odd sports bars, also owned by
northerners, to watch NHL games or college tournaments. But, for the
most part the sport is considered an oddity to be watched every four years
between the bobsledding and the luge competition. Newspaper coverage of
the NHL consists of daily final scores and standings with a once a week
filler blurb from the AP if there's room. College hockey in the news,
surely you jest? Not a peep. TV coverage, aside from the satelite
coverage, consists of whenever Home Sports Entertainment desides to fill
in som dead airspace with something a bit more unusual than Australian
rules football, rodeos, and bass fishing tournaments. HSE is owned by
the guy that owns the NJ Devils so we get a stray Devils home game every
now and then. Here's the extent of College Hockey on HSE. One night this
week they advertised a tape delay of the Beanpot final, that was scheduled
for 11pm, at which time I tuned in only to hear them announce that the game
would be "joined in progress at the conclusion of our match". The "match"
in this instance was partners ping-pong. I KID YOU NOT! The TAPE DELAY
of the Beanpot was later JOINED IN PROGRESS after the ping-pong games.
Talk about someone being SERIOUSLY pissed off. I found myself cursing the
TV, HSE, ping-pong, Dallas, Texass, and anything else that popped into my
head. Finally I calmed down, accepted the reality that few people here
give a shit about hockey, and dialed into my system. There, in the safety
of my home, I was able to relax, read this groups postings (along with rsh
on the net), and enjoyed some hockey talk. Thanks.
