PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 15th-ranked  Providence College Friars shutout the
Union Skating Dutchmen, 8-0, Sunday, October 29, 2000 at PC's Schneider
Arena.  Providence sophomore goaltender Nolan Schaefer made 35 saves and
recorded his first career shutout.
         The Friars took an early 2-0 lead on goals from  J.J. Picinic at
12:41 and Peter Fregoe at 13:37.  Picinic netted his second goal in as many
games when he fired a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle that beat
Union goaltender Brandon Snee high to the glove side.  Fregoe added to the
lead when he finished off a breakaway by wristing a high shot over a
sprawled Snee.
         Providence took over in the second period with four goals to take
a 6-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.  Sophomore Jon DiSalvatore netted
consecutive goals at 1:45 and 5:22 before Drew Omicioli recorded a
short-handed tally at 9:48 to give PC a seven-goal cushion.  Senior Jay
Leach finished off the scoring in the period with a blast from the left
point with 23 seconds remaining in the period.
         The Friars added power-play tallies by Mike Lucci at 6:15 and 7:32
to finish out the scoring in the third period.
         Snee, who was replaced by Marc Wise at the start of the third
period, combined with Wise to make 32 stops in the game
         With the win, the Friars' record improved to 3-0-1 overall, while
the Dutchmen dropped to 2-1-0.
         Providence College will return to action on Friday,  November
4  versus Maine at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
