Today's (5/3/95) Minnesota Daily had a brief blurb about Jason Godbout's
upcoming surgery. I don't think it really has any new info. I believe
I heard that Godbout is not taking any classes this quarter while having
and recovering from the surgery. This makes a lot of sense, but how does
it sit with the NC$$, does it affect his "Normal progress" toward his
degree? I can see that it would be an area open for abuse, if a player
could just go to school the quarters he's playing his sport. (Of course,
I can also see an exception being made for "normal progress" when a person's
having heart surgery...) Anyway, enough of my wonderings; here's the
item from the Minnesota Daily:

Godbout set for surgery

Gophers hockey player Jason Godbout was admitted to a local
hospital Tuesday for preliminary testing before his scheduled heart
surgery Thursday.

Doctors will repair a small hole in Godbout's right atrium.

Doctors at the University Hospital in Madison, Wis., discovered
the hole, which is believed to have been there since birth, a few
hours before Minnesota played Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the
NCAA Regionals on March 24. Godbout suffered a minor stroke.

The hole is big enough for doctors to prevent Godbout from playing
hockey until the defenseman has fully recovered from the surgery.

Gophers coach Doug Woog said he hopes Godbout will be able to start
training this summer and begin the fall season in normal condition.
