MTU sweeps the weekend with a 4-0 shutout over St. Cloud.
St. Cloud's coach, Greg Dahl, sat out three players including
leading scorer Holem because of their "trash talking" on the
ice Friday night. Also St. Cloud's Santare who received his
second DQ of the season Friday will be absent from action
through next game. Then, early in the first period of this
game, their goalie, Leitza, received a 10 minute misconduct
which put him in the penalty box for comments he made to
the ref's. Coach Dahl sat him out for the rest of the game.
St. Cloud was clearly playing shorthanded and could not
match the skills of MTU.

It was the first time since 1980 that MTU gained a shutout
on the road which was against MSU during Ron Mason's first
year as coach at MSU.

Meyers got MTU's first goal at 3:32 inthe first. On a drive
down the center, Roy was knocked into the net by a defending
St. Cloud player, but not before he passed off to Brett
Meyers. Meyers wrapped around the net and scored while
Leitza was tied up by Jimmie Roy in the net. Leitza objected
to the ref's about the score and received the 10 minute
misconduct for this. Stone was put into the net for St. Cloud
for the remainder of the game. Late in the first, Perrett,
evidently unaware that he was free on a breakaway skated into
the St. Cloud zone and back handed a pass to Jeff Mikesch in
the slot who scored handedly.

The second was a period of hard skating and outstanding goalie
play at both ends. There was only one penalty, that of
MTU's skating penalty box crew, Jason Prokopetz, for
charging. Jason is outstanding player but he hasn't learned
that finesse counts when tangling with the opponent. He has
been improving but still gets caught showing excessive zeal
for mixing it up. Jason is a stalwart in front of the opponent's
net for MTU and I love his "devil may care" attitude on the ice.
I just wish he would learn to be less obvious in taking out
oppposing players.

Both of MTU's goal in the third period were short handed events.
MTU kept baiting St. Cloud by giving them powerplays. However,
about the time St. Cloud thought that they might score, Tech
would break free and score. Garvey offered the first chance
by getting a holding penalty at 6:22. Harris stole the puck
from SCSU and passed it up for Stevens who moved it over to
a streaking Jimmie Roy. Roy put it on net and added to MTU's
score. Then Jimmie Roy apparently tought that SCSU ought to
have another chance and hooked one of their players at 15:04.
Pat Mikesch blocked a St. Cloud shot, retained the rebound and
rocketed down the center to score on a panicking Stone.
