BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) -- Doug Friedman's two goals in the
second period and Mike Pomichter's pair in the third lifted
Boston University to a 5-2 win over Vermont in an opening round
game of the Sheraton-USAir Hockey Classic.
The Terriers (11-3) will meet New Hampshire in the
championship game Thursday night. New Hampshire beat Dartmouth
3-2 in the other first-round game.
Friedman's power play goal at 8:12 of the second period gave
the Terriers their first lead of the night. Earlier in the
period, Jon Jenkins beat Vermont's Tim Thomas with a wrist shot
just under the crossbar at 5:43 of the second period.
Vermont (4-6-1) had taken a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by
Martin St. Louis at 5:17 of the first period.
Friedman's second goal at 19:07 of the second period gave the
Terriers a 3-1 lead. Although the Vermont bench protested
Friedman's goal, it held up and the Terriers had a 2-goal lead.
Friedman flicked the puck out of the air and the Vermont staff
thought it should have been waved off because of a high stick.
Pomichter, BU's top scorer, put the Terriers up 4-1 at 11:22
of the third period when he collected a rebound and fired it past
a fallen Tim Thomas.
Vermont battled back and narrowed the margin to 4-2 on Nicolas
Perreault's power play goal at 12:13. Pomichter scored the final
goal for Boston at 19:58.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) -- Nick Poole's screen shot with 34
seconds left in regulation lifted New Hampshire to a 3-2 win over
Dartmouth in a first-round game of the Sheraton-USAir Hockey
Classic held at the University of Vermont.
Poole picked up a loose puck off a faceoff in Dartmouth's end
and wristed a shot that eluded Dartmouth's Mike Bracco for the
Wildcats' 12th win of the season.
New Hampshire, which is ranked No. 3 in the nation, improved
its overall record to 12-3-1.
Dartmouth and New Hampshire traded goals late in the second
period. The Big Green's Matt Collins poked in a rebound at 16:28
off Yanick Roussin's shot from the left point. New Hampshire
matched it 36 seconds later as Rob Donovan wristed a shot from in
close past Bracco at 17:04.
New Hampshire took the lead at 14:38 of the third period when
Mike Sullivan flicked one in on the short side. The Big Green
responded on Darren Wercinski's rebound goal from in close.
Brent Cavicchi finished with 17 saves for the Wildcats, while
Bracco had 26 saves.
   Dartmouth's record fell to 2-6.
