(This is an article apparently for HOCKEY-L from Greg Sorenson .. wts).
When Chicago Cub traditionalists were lamenting the lights coming to
Wrigley, George Will made this paraphrased point:
"Night baseball is not an aberration, not winning a World Series since
1908 is. The Cubs are a Colonial Williamsburg of baseball; a quaint
replica of a real team. Give me a team like the Oakland A's...a team
that knows how to get the job done."
I think this sums up the Minnesota Golden Gophers quite accurately. How
does this grasp at "tradition" helped this team win? And what is the
official definition of "in-state?" If a kid from Warroad goes and plays
for the Dubuque Fighting Saints in Jr.B, is he not considered? What
about a kid from Michigan who plays for the St. Paul Vulcans? Face it,
good talent is hard to find, and the Gophs do themselves a great
disservice by cutting themselves out of the talent pool.
