The game statistics from Elmira's 19-0 victory against Binghamton State are
almost unbelievable. The 19 goals was a school record for Elmira against
NCAA competition (the Soaring Eagles surpassed the 20-goal mark a couple
times against club teams in the '70s), and they set another record with
83(!) shots on goal. Bob Holmes, Joey Spinelli, Bob McGee, and Bernie
Cassell all had hat tricks in the game, and Holmes got his in the first 9:09
of the game, which is believed to be the quickest hat trick in Elmira
history. Spinelli also became the sixth Elmira player ever to score 30

This may well be true, as the Soaring Eagles did play a number of their
regulars for the whole game. On the other hand, neither of the two Elmira
goalies, Delorimiere and Oswald, is normally a starter. I think Oswald was
seeing his first action of the season. In addition, defenseman Tom Ford,
who picked up a goal and an assist, is a senior walk-on who had played in a
few JV games and was seeing his first (and only) varsity action ever. I saw
a few other names I didn't recognize in the box score, and they may have
been perennial bench-warmers or JV players as well. Elmira's last game of
the regular season is this weekend against Mercyhurst, one of the two teams
to beat them this year, and head coach Glenn Thomaris was royally pissed at
the Soaring Eagles' lackluster effort in that game. Even though Elmira was
only playing Binghamton (which is no longer the worst team in Division III
but still makes the short list), Thomaris probably wanted to avoid having
his players let up before the big revenge game this weekend. And anyway, it
might not have made much of a difference who was playing for Elmira in this
game. Last year, the Soaring Eagles did rest many of their starters against
Binghamton -- and won 16-0.
Aside to Mark Daly: I've been following Elmira on and off this year, and
although I have not seen them in person, from what I've been able to find
out, they are every bit as impressive as their record and the rankings would
lead you to believe. My only gripe about the Soaring Eagles has to do with
their scheduling. A Division III team that's this good probably ought to
try the occasional Division I opponent, as Union, Mercyhurst, and RIT (among
others) have been known to do. All of Elmira's games this season have been
against ECAC East and West competition.
