Saturday night, in the finals of the National Capital Tournament, Merrimack
beat Ottawa U. 2-1. As the score indicates, it was a defensive struggle. The
player of the game was Merrimack's freshman goalie, Martin Legault, who had 41
saves for the Warriors. Legault is from Gloucester, a suburb of Ottawa, so his
coming home may have contributed to his performance. Ottawa's goalie, J-F
Rivard, their normal backup, was the MVP for the Gee-Gees in the game, he had
19 saves. Jim Gibson scored in the first for Merrimack, Matt Adams scored in
the second to make it 2-0 for Merrimack, and Alain Tardif scored a power-play
goal in the third for Ottawa to break Legault's shutout. I'm wondering how
much PT Legault gets normally, he seemed to play quite well on Saturday. I
didn't get to see any of the other games, so I didn't see Merrimack's other
goalie. I was also impressed by the two huge freshman defensemen that
Merrimack has, 6'5" John Jakopin and 6'8" Steve McKenna. They could be forces
in a couple of years. BTW, the ref left quite a bit to be desired, especially
in the late stages of the game, but the university refs here usually do.
