Would rule 1-2-b apply?  "Except for official markings provided for in
these rules, the entire playing surface and the boards should be white
in color except the kick plate at the bottom of the boards, which should
be light yellow in color."
 
The phrase "should be white" seems to leave open the possibility of ads
being o.k.
