Patrick and Kenny asked and wrote about Intramural hockey ...

I just talked with Dave Ames, a U Maine assistant AD and the
Recreational Sports Director ...

Maine dropped intramural ice hockey about 5 years ago after struggling
with poor ice times, difficulties getting officials, off-campus
(ineligible) players, and expense (>$45/team/game). Campus officials
complained of the strain that the late night games put on students
(morning classes etc). This came at a time that the University was
especially concerned over late night parties and alcohol abuse and is
perhaps related.

Maine intramurals have gone to floor hockey at essentially no cost and
now with about 70 teams participating.

The athletic department through the arena staff provides opportunity to
play ice hockey with leagues such as Senior A, Cardiac, Industrial, and
Rusty-Blades. Most of these are available to community folks as well as
campus students and faculty/staff. Games are at Alfond Arena and nearby
Sockalexis Memorial Arena. Some travel play with other areas, such as
Maine Maritime Academy, is available.
