He wasn't; Minnesota took him in the 6th round in 1989.  Then, I think
he went to the Sharks' organization in the "expansion" draft where the
Sharks picked players from Minnesota's system.  Sometime over the
summer, he must have gone to Detroit (despite not having played a game
of pro hockey yet), but I have no idea how.
