Some Gopher hockey news:

Charley Walters' column in yesterday's St. Paul Pioneer Press said that over
70 former Gopher hockey players including all 3 Broten brothers (Neal, Aaron,
and Paul) and all 3 Micheletti brothers (Don, Joe, and Pat) will participate
in the Aug 21 game to open the new Mariucci Arena.

Today's Daily also has an item about the Alumni game to open the new arena and
one about Gopher Olympic-team hopefuls. It's appended here for anyone who's
interested.

Tickets for the Gopher hockey alumni legends game and the grand
opening of the new Mariucci Arena will go on sale today at the Gopher
ticket office.

Gopher hockey fans will have their first chance to see the new arena
as Minnesota opens its 71st year of varsity hockey. The legends game,
on Aug. 21 at 7 p.m., will be the first public event in the new
building.

The alumni game features several former Gopher greats including John
Mayasich, Lou Nanne, Herb Brooks, Wendell Anderson, Murray
Williamson, Jack McCartan and the Minnesota contingent from the 1980
gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic team.

A total of more than 60 former All-Americans, Olympians and
professional players who played at Minnesota will again skate in
front of the hometown fans.

All tickets for the game are $10 general-admission seats and can be
purchased in person at the Gopher ticket office or by calling the
office at 624-8080 or 1-800-U-Gopher.

Olympic hockey

Gopher hockey players Craig Johnson and Darby Hendrickson were
recently invited to the U.S. Olympic team's final tryout camp in
early August.

Johnson, along with teammates Hendrickson, Chris McAlpine and Jeff
Nielsen, attended the Olympic team's preliminary tryout camp in June
in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Johnson, who played at Hill-Murray High School in St. Paul, led all
players in scoring last season with 22 goals and 24 assists.

About 35 candidates for the 1994 U.S. Olympic team will gather in
Cromwell, Conn., on Aug. 2 for a two-week camp.

U.S. Olympic coach Tim Taylor, the head coach at Yale for the past 17
years, hopes to reduce that number to about 23 for the nearly
three-week European tour which begins Aug. 16.

The team will play in France and Norway in November and in Russia in
December, then return to Europe about 10 days before the Olympics in
February in Lillehammer, Norway, for some late tuneups.
