I am sure the Maine fans are going to groan at my having brought this
up :-), but...

At 17-0-1, Maine has a shot at a few records, such as:

Longest unbeaten streak in a season: 33, RPI (1984-85).
Maine would tie this on 2/19/93 against BU and break it the next night
 against BU.
Longest unbeaten streak over 1+ seasons: 38, RPI (1984-85, 1985-86).
Maine would tie this in its last regular season game 3/6/93 against UNH
and break it in the first HE playoff game.
Longest unbeaten streak to start a season: not sure, but I think this is
still held by Cornell which finished the 1969-70 season at 29-0-0.
Maine would tie this on 2/5/93 against UMass-Lowell and break it the
 next night against UMass-Lowell.
Longest Hockey East unbeaten streak in a season: 12, Maine (1991-92).
At 9-0-1, Maine would tie this on 1/24/93 at BC and break it on 1/29/93
at UNH. Maine finished the 1991-92 season 10-0-2 in its last 12 HE games
and is 19-0-3 in its last 22 HE games which is a HE record as near as I
 can tell for 1+ seasons.

The only other team to go a whole season unbeaten was Clarkson, 21-0-0 in
1955-56 (including one forfeit over a Canadian team).

This is already the best start far and away a Maine team has ever had.
Their previous best start in terms of going unbeaten was in 1987-88 when
Maine started 7-0-1 before losing to Michigan Tech 7-4.
