Summary:
 
It didn't take St. Lawrence long to show everyone who was going to win
at Achilles Rink on Saturday night.  They scored just 44 seconds in and
never looked back, as they beat Union, 6-2.
 
SLU's Ted Beattie scored twice in the first 3 1/2 minutes.  Burke Murphy
and Mike Allain added first period goals for the Saints to give them a
4-0 lead after 1 period.  Union looked terrible on offense, defense, and
goaltending in the period, and was outshot 13-4.
 
After letting everything go in the 1st, the referees took over during
the second period.  11 minors were handed out during the period, and the
teams traded power play goals.  Union's goal was put in by Cory
Holbrough, his first of the season.
 
Union scored early in the 3rd on Kevin Darby's third of the season to
pull within 5-2, but by then it was already too late.  St. Lawrence
added their 6th goal when Massoud slipped behind 3 Union defenders and
beat Luigi Villa high right.
 
Villa probably had his worst period of the season in the first.  He
stopped 9 of 13 shots, but a few of the goals were on shots that Villa
normally saves. He setlled down to play well in the 2nd and 3rd.  Cory
Holbrough had a strong game, with a goal and an assist.  Sophomore
forward Kevin Darby also played a very strong game, always in the middle
of the action.
 
On the weekend, Union played 2 good periods, 2 bad periods, and then 2
more pretty good ones.  Unfortunately, the bad ones were enough to take
them out of both games.  Freshman defenseman Reid Simonton had a
particularly rough weekend.  He wins the "Scott Whitney Award" for
making the mistakes on defense that came back to haunt the Dutchmen, and
wins Josh Haravay's "Doghouse Award" for his bad choice of shots on the
power play in both of this weekend's games.
 
I would have to say that the referees were pretty inconsistent in
calling penalties.  They also did a terrible job making offside calls
when the play was clearly on sides.  It probably didn't matter much,
though, since SLU clearly outplayed Union.  You could see that they were
not about to be swept on their Capital District trip after losing to RPI
on Friday.
 
One more interesting note from watching the game..  I have never seen a
player get excited about being sent to the penalty box like SLU's
Spencer Meany.  Both times he was sent off, he raced right over to the
penalty box door and couldn't wait to go in.
 
St. Lawrence is now 4-2 in the ECAC, 7-2-1 overall, and Union is 1-4 in
the league, 1-6 overall.  Union makes the short trip to Troy next
weekend to play travel partner RPI.
