Since we are discussing ratings this week, I guess it's time to post the
first RPICH of the season. RPICH (Rating Percentage Index for College
Hockey) is my implementation of the RPI ratings that have been applied
to college hockey, basketball, and other sports.

The recipe isn't a secret. Calculate the Winning Percentage (WP) of each
team ((wins*2 + losses*2 + ties) / 2). Now, for each team calculate the
Opponents' Winning Percentage (OWP) by summing the WP of the opponent in
each game (exclusive of games against that team) and dividing by the number
of games. Calculate the Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage (OOWP)
for each team by summing the OWP of the opponent in each game and dividing
by the number of games. Finally, RPI = (WP*.2) + (OWP*.4) + (OOWP*.4).

RPI ratings have been used by Division 1 Ice Hockey Committee as a tool for
producing their weekly poll and seeding the teams in the national tournament.
While RPICH is not and has not been supplied to the Committee, it should be
identical to the official ratings.

I am posting the RPICH to the list because I think that fans should be aware
of these numbers, as they apparently have some impact in how teams are seeded
into the tournament. I specifically invite any members of the Ice Hockey
Committee to comment on this, either to me or to the list.

With no further ado, here's the first RPICH of the season:

Rating Percentage Index for College Hockey, compiled by Erik Biever

RPICH is an attempt to rate college hockey teams by objective methods.
The formula is that used as one of the tools for evaluating teams for
the national tournaments in college baseball, basketball, and hockey.
RPICH is calculated by summing each team's winning percentage, the
average winning percentage of its opponents, and the average winning
percentage of its opponents' opponents, multiplied by 20%, 40%, and
40% respectively. Factors such as home ice and margin of victory are
not included. Only the 206 Division 1 games through 11/30/92 are
included.

RPICH IS BASED ON SCORES COMPILED AND CALCULATIONS PERFORMED
INDEPENDENT OF THE NCAA AND ANY AGENTS THEREOF.
