The Northern Michigan Wildcats completed a weekend sweep of WCHA rivals
Colorado College (the Tis) with a 3-2 victory at Marquette's Lakeview
Arena. It was a close and exciting game, particularly the last two
periods.

The first period seemed to be just a lot of skating, with few good
scoring opportunities for either team. It ended 0-0. There was a minor
fight at the end of the period which saw two Tigers and one Wildcat get
double minors for roughing, and one 'Cat a five-minute "grabbing the
face mask" penalty (I thoght that only occurred in football?).

The Wildcats scored tice eearly in the second period. On the first goal
freshman Kyuim Shim banged in a rebound from right in front of the net.
The second featured a great rush by Dan Ruoho whept in on the goalie and
passed off at the last possible moment to Bryan Ganz for the score.

The Tigers scored their first goal of the game early in the third period
on a good pass close to the net during a 5-3 advantage power play. The
Wildcats promptly returned the favor when they found themselves in a 5-3
situation moments later. This, the game-winning goal as it turned out,
was scored by senior Dave Huettl--his first ever, after 61 games of
competition! He put on a delightful "kayak paddling" show after
scoring. The Tigers made it tight with yet another power play goal
minutes later. They peppered the NMU net the last few minutes,
especially once they had pulled their goalie and had six attackers, but
Corwin Saurdiff stayed strong. Both teams had excellent goaltending,
and both goalies made 28 saves.

Sorry there isn't more and better detail (and spelling?) in this report,
but it's being done without benefit of the newspaper account.

The sweep improved the Wildcats' WCHA recored to 3-5-2 and their overall
record to 3-7-2. They should be higher in the league standings this
week. Next week league-leading (at least, tied for as of the beginning
of the weekend) Denver comes to town. We're looking forward to it!
