The Penn State Icers improved their record to 9-0-0 with wins over
Atlantic League rival Maryland and Navy (a non-conference game). On Friday,
the Icers got off to a slow start, scoring only 3 goals in the first, but
added 5 in the second and 7 in the third for a 15-1 crushing of the Terrapins.
Penn State was 7 of 10 on the power play. Chris Cervellero led the Icers with
4 goals and 2 assists. Other scorers of note were Don Lamison (3-1), Dave
Murphy (1-1), Rob Keegan (1-3) and Matt Cavrak (1-0). Penn State is now
3-0-0 in the ACHL.
On Saturday, the Icers travelled to Annapolis to take on the Midshipmen
of Navy. Navy, ranked 11th in the lastest ACHA poll (Penn State was second),
was no match for the Icers, as Penn State won 8-3. Penn State jumped out to
a 4-0 lead in the first, then held off a Navy rally (the Midshipmen scored
three straight to make it 4-3). The Icers added a power-play goal late in
the first and scored again just before the end of the period to make it 6-3.
Penn State score twice more in the third. Icer goalie John Gray picked up his
43rd career victory, making him the most victorious netminder in Penn State
history. Scoring for Penn State were Ross Cowan (3 goals-1 assist), Matt
Hoffman (2-0), Scott Mangene (1-0), Rob Keegan (1-2), and Don Lamison (1-3).
Since No. 1 ranked Iowa State lost recently, the Icers should be able to
take over the top spot. The Icers next game is Saturday against Eastern
Michigan in the first round of the Michigan-Dearborn Thanksgiving Tournament.
Hopefully, I'll have complete Icer box scores soon.
