Goaltenders: MICH Shields, LSSU Thompson

Stars: 1-MICH Shields 2-MICH Oliver 3-MICH Roberts

Comments: Steve Shields was outstanding in the Michigan net, and the 2nd
period may have been the best for the Blue in recent memory. The game
was closer than 5-2, but Michigan capitalized more often. The team was
pumped after ending their losing streak at Norris Arena.

Saturday, November 7, Sault Ste Marie MI

Michigan 0 1 0 -- 1 18 12 8 -- 38

Goaltenders: MICH Shields, LSSU Lacher

Stars: 1-LSSU Lacher 2-LSSU Strachan 3-LSSU Hanley

Comments: Michigan put together a solid pair of back-to-back games, but
Lacher was too much in the LSSU net. Michigan outplayed LSSU and lost
6-1, thanks to 5 LSSU power play goals. If the Wolverines can keep 5
skaters on the ice, they can look like world beaters. After all that has
been said about the Michigan defense (one NYR scout called them the best
in college hockey in the past 5 years and jokingly said that they were
better than the NHL expansion teams), it once again appears that LSSU's
defense may be the strongest in the west. Hanley and Barnes provided
some scoring and Michael Smith was solid all evening.

Knuble gone: Late in the 3rd period, Michigan's Mike Knuble leveled LSSU
freshman Keith Aldridge after the whistle had blown (offsides). Knuble
was headed straight for Aldridge as the play was developing, and didn't
let up as Aldridge crossed the blue line. It was a bang-bang-bang play.
First the whistle, then Knuble smacking Aldridge, then Aldridge smacking
the ice. Aldridge's helmet flew off and he appeared to be severely dazed
as his teammates helped/carried him off the ice. Knuble received a major
penalty and a game misconduct (which will result in a 1 game suspension).
Knuble could have let up some, but the two were going to collide whether
the whistle blew or not. It was deserving of a penalty, but not a
misconduct. Had the play occurred in Ann Arbor, Knuble would not have
been tossed. Earlier in the game, the Lakers took a couple of runs at
Michigan goaltender Steve Shields resulting in one penalty. Knuble's
infraction was little worse, if any. In fact, Knuble's "cheap shot" was
mild compared to the rough stuff we saw in the Michigan-Western Michigan
series the previous weekend.

Ward gone: Michigan defenseman Aaron Ward (1991 Winnipeg Jets #1 pick, 5th
overall) will miss several weeks with a knee injury. Ward did not make
the trip to LSSU this weekend. It is speculated that he may return near
Thanksgiving (about the time he'll probably join Team Canada for the
junior world championships).
