Merrimack got off on the right foot by pasting the University of Ottawa
Gee Gees (a Gee Gee is a horse) 9-1 in an afternoon exhibition. Ottawa
was coming off losses to UMass-Lowell and UNH Friday and Saturday nights
and the fatigue seemed to show at times, although Ottawa mustered 13 shots
on goal in the third period. Ottawa was the Canadian national champion
last season, although they have lost a lot of players from that team and
were playing quite a few first-year university players.

Among the stars for Merrimack, freshman Ryan Mailhiot impressed quite a
few with his hustle and hard work; he scored a pretty goal in the first
when he took a pass out of the corner and fired a wrist shot past Phil
Comtois. Comtois played well in allowing only three goals over the first
half of the game.

Goaltending was again strong for Merrimack as it has been in scrimmages.
Senior Mike Doneghey started and faced only five shots over the first half,
stopping all five, but freshman Dan Millar was tested with 18 shots in
the second half and allowed only one goal which he had no chance on. Both
goalies look to be strong and prepared for the start of the season.

The defense played well, as Bryan Miller scored twice and carried the puck
well, and Mark Cornforth looks to put to rest any fears of a sophomore
jinx as he scored and was handing out solid hits all over the ice. The
Warriors played 10 defensemen and their continued good play means Ron
Anderson will have a hard time deciding which six to play at Western
Michigan.

Guy Ragault also played well, scoring twice and narrowly missing a third
as he took advantage of his size and played a clean, physical game.

Merrimack opens up this coming Fri-Sat Oct 23-24 at Western Michigan (I'll
be making the trip and will report Sunday night when we return), then
returns home to host Alabama-Huntsville Oct 30-31.

Heather was up and got her first introduction to Merrimack hockey. She had
a great time (loves the loud boards) but still needs to get used to the
cold climate at the Igloo. :-)
