I know Rt. 17 can be bad, but the Thruway is not immune to snow problems,
either.  Depending on which way the wind is blowing, Erie to Buffalo, Buffalo
to around Batavia, and in/around Syracuse can get a lot of "Lake Effect" snow.
I can't say too much about things to the east of Syracuse, but you are getting
far enough away from Lake Ontario and Lake Erie to probably avoid any heavy
snow.
 
In good weather, I can get from my house to Albany in about 4 hours.  I will
definitely watch the weather tonight to determine how early I need to leave in
the morning in order to be there for the opening faceoff.  See you there!!
