Strong defense, freshman's goal carry UMD(6-4) over North Dakota.
Chad Erickson made 32 of his 40 saves in the first half of the game and fresh-
man Corey Osmak scored his first college goal two minutes into the third period
to break a 4-4 tie Friday night in Minnesota-Duluth's 6-4 WCHA victory over
North Dakota.
Shortly after Osmak's tip-in put the Bulldogs (4-5-2, 3-4-2) ahead 5-4,
UMD's Kevin Kaiser took a five minute major penalty for checking Ross Johnson
from behind and the Sioux had an extended power play. UMD penalty killers
allowed only one shot, however, and North Dakota (7-3-1) could not muster any
more scoring threats. Jon Roloff scored twice for UMD, the second time into an
empty net with five seconds remaining.
*************Michigan Tech 5, St Cloud State 3
The game was in St Cloud, MN.Scoring for St Cloud were:
Bret Hedican, Chris Scheid and Scott Eichstadt. Scoring for Tech were: Reid
McDonald, Kelly Hurd, Jim Storm (had 2), and Darcy Martini. Geoff Sargeant
made 27 saves for Tech (5-4-1, 2-4-1) and Mike O'Hara was in goal for SCS.

Jason Francisco and Tray Tuomie each scored a goal and assisted on
another as the Badgers (6-3, 7-3-1) defeated the host Tigers (1-10).

David Sacco had two goals and five
assists, leading the host Terriers to the nonconference victory over the
Pioneers. Terriers goalie John Bradley made 18 saves for his first career
shut-out. Boston's Shawn MacEachern scored twice, including the opening goal
19 seconds into the game, and had an assist. Mark Davis scored two goals and
had three assists. His twin brother Mike Davis, added two goals and one
assist, and Tony Amonte had a goal and two assists.

The last undefeated teams in the WCHA
used their best offensive weapons Friday night at Mariucci Arena, but it came
down to a couple of defensemen to decide the game. Travis Richards and Chris
McAlpine were in the right spots at the right times, scoring third-period goals
and giving the Gophers a 5-3 victory over No. 1-ranked Northern Michigan.
The Gophers will sail into tonight's rematch (7:05 CST) in sole possession
of the WCHA lead. The 7,562 fans (standing room only crowd) spent
most of last night jumping out of their seats as the action raged back
and forth. The third-ranked Gophers are now 8-0-1 and the Wildcats 7-1-1.
Grant Bischoff scored twice and Jason Miller had a goal and an assist
to pace the Gophers. Also scoring for the Gophers were Travis Richards and
Chris McAlpine. Scoring for the Wildcats were Kevin Scott, Dallas Drake, and
Brad Werenka. Billy Pye(NM) and Jeff Stolp(MN) were in goal and squelched
numerous other threats.

The game was fast paced and very entertaining. As John Gilbert said, we were up
and down from our seats all evening. There was some rough play in the first
period, but as soon as Referee Buzz Christensen decided to start calling some
penalties things settled down a bit. I look forward to another high quality
game tonight with the Ref keeping the tempers under control. It really is so
much fun watching teams who are so evenly matched.
