Actual capacity of the John Glas for hockey is 2,500 (including standing room).
They are presently remodeling some locker rooms to accommodate more
women's/girls teams, BSU will sponsor a varsity women's team this year
plus Bemidji High School and some Bemidji Youth Hockey boys and girls teams
play their games at that rink. They are talking about adding bleacher
seating on both ends for the upcoming season, much like they do for
tournaments, increasing the capacity by about 500. Troy is correct in
saying that there are rumors regarding major remodling projects, but I
think it is best to wait and see how the civic center vote turns out. As
it is, the John Glas has great ice, and good infrastructre, but it lacks a
large capacity and a large press box.

The civic center bonding issue will be on the fall ballot in the city of
Bemidji, and if passed will include a 5,000 (aprox.) seat ice arena where
the Beavers (both teams) would play along with the high school I assume.
Besides the obvious advantages for the fans and media, it would also free
up John Glas for more junior varsity and youth hockey type activities, not
to mention practice time, intramural, and general skating. I don't think
it would be located on campus though, more likely out by the new High
School or on the site of the old High School, which would be nice since
it's right across the street from BSU.

There currently are three rinks in Bemidji (pop. 15,000), JG Fieldhouse
(2,500) with ice most of the year except April, May, June, City Arena
(500) with ice year round mostly used by youth hockey and the local figure
skating club, and Nymore Gardens (500) with ice only October-March used
primarily by the high school boys and girls for practice, jv games, and
youth hockey. Bemidji Youth Hockey is in the last stages of a fund drive
to build another rink that would primarily be used by girls and boys
youth hockey.
