I'm kind of surprised Arthur Berman didn't respond to this one before I
got a chance. Suffice it to say that I disagree with Mr. Winer's
comments about immigration of players and that I DO detect a note of
jingoism.

The specific element I want to respond to is his comment that Title IX
has ruined college wrestling. Title IX has done absolutely no such
thing. What has hurt minor sport athletics is the response of football
dominated athletic departments to a combination of Title IX and budget
constraints. Football still gobbles up 85 scholarships and an amazing
amount of revenues. And, before anyone brings it up, football LOSES
money at the vast majority of Div I schools. Cut it down to 45-50
scholarships, cut down bloated coaching staffs and forego that new
practice facility, and people would be amazed at the freedom that the
rest of the athletic department would have. Hey, more schools might
decide to offer hockey.
