Article from October 31, 1990 issue of the _Michigan Tech LODE_:

"Icers knock off Laurentian"
by Jeff Peters
Staff Writer

The Michigan Tech hockey Huskies continue their homestand by hosting
Western Collegiate Hockey Assiciation (WCHA) opponent University of
North Dakota. North Dakota was the preseason favorite to win the WCHA.
Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.

First year coach Newell Brown is optimistic about the upcoming
series with the Fighting Sioux. "We are looking at this weekend's
series as a chance to move up in the standings."

Last Thrusday the Huskies defeated Laurentian University of Sadbury
Ontario, Canada, 5-2. The game was an exhibition game and did not
effect the standings or statistics. That didn't mean the team didn't
take the game seriously.

"We're looking to improve in every game we play," coach Brown said.
"We're happy with the win but now we have to work for the next game."

Tech drew first blood 1:19 into the opening period when freshman Jim
Storm shot the puck over the shoulder of the Voyageur goalie. Sophomore
John Yound and junior Jamie Steer both recieved assists on the play.

At the 8:30 mark, senior Kelly Hurd scored off a pass from junior
Davis Payne and freshman Lane Lebel. Hurd's shot sailed over Laurentian
goaltender Steve Hogg who was entangled with a tech player in the net.

Husky goalie, freshman Scott Vettraino had 14 saves in the period.
The Huskies started the second period off the same way they started
the first period, quickly. Kelly Hurd shot a pass from Davis Payne over
a diving Voyageur goaltender just 35 seconds into the period. Senior
Rob Tustian go the second assist on the goal.

Laurentian scored their first goal, on a power play, 8 minutes into the
period. It was their only goal of the perid.

Newell Brown exchanged goalkeepers at 12:44, calling on freshman jamie
Ram. Ram, who suffered a concussion days before , wasn't given the go
ahead to play until Thrusday afternoon.

Ram's first test came three minutes later on a Laurentian break away.
Ram denied the oncoming Yoyageur by diving and blocking the shot. Ram
made a similar save late in the period. Coach Brown was very pleased
with both goalies performances.

"Both goalies did an excellent job, it's good to see we will have depth
at that position," commented Brown.

Kelly Hurd had a chance for a hat trick at the end of the period, but a
diving Laurentian goalie foiled his attempt.

In the period both teams finally were used to each other and the tempo
picked up.

Junior Drcy Martini blasted a slapshot from the right point past a awed
Voyegeur goaltender to put Tech up 4-1. John Young and Greg Parnell
each recieved assists on the play.

Laurentian broght the game to withing two when Gelnn Greenough, a former
International Hockey League player, scored a shorthanded goal. It is
interesting to note that Canadian colleges are allowed to sign
ex-professional players.

"If you don't have at least eight ex-pro players on your team, you're
not considered good," said the Laurentian head coach Stu Duncan.

Tech's final goal was unusual but freshman Hugh McEwen accepted it.
McEwen shot the puck from the corner toweard the net. The Voyageur
goalkeeper went to slap it away, but mishandled it and the puck scooted
past him for a score. That goal ended the game at 5-2.
