Here are some excerpts from the BG hockey press release for this week.
This info came directly from the SID office (I did not type this in--too
much work!).

Miami Takes Three of Four Points From BG
FALCONS FACE WESTERN MICHIGAN IN HOME-AND-HOME SET THIS WEEKEND
BEFORE HOLIDAY BREAK

SERIES DATA: The Bowling Green State University hockey team will
attempt to head into the holiday break on a winning note as it
meets Western Michigan University this weekend (Dec. 6-7) in
home-and-home action.

The two rivals kick off the series Friday night in Kalamazoo at
WMU's Lawson Arena (4,000), before concluding the two-game set the
next evening at the BGSU Ice Arena (5,000). Face-off time for both
games is scheduled for 7:30.

The Falcons enter weekend play with an overall and Central Collegiate
Hockey Association record of 2-7-1. BG holds down the eighth and
final playoff spot in the league. On the other hand, WMU owns a
6-3-1 slate overall and in league play. The Broncos are third in
the CCHA and trail second-place Michigan and front-running Lake
Superior by one and three points, respectively.

COVERAGE: Bowling Green area radio listeners can catch both games
on either WBVI (96.7 FM) or WBGU (88.1 FM) radio.

THE COACHES: Jerry York is in his 13th season as head coach at
Bowling Green and 20th overall in the collegiate ranks. The
Watertown, Mass., native enters this weekend two wins shy of his
300th behind the Falcon bench. York owns a 298-196-24 (.598) ledger
at BG. His overall record of 423-283-27 (.595), which includes a
seven-year stint at Clarkson College (1972-79), ranks eighth on
the NCAA's all-time victory list and is fourth among active coaches.
York moved into sole possession of eighth place last season with
a pair of wins against WMU (Nov. 23-24). He earned his 400th career
win in a 4-3 win over Miami on Feb. 3, 1990, at the time becoming
only the ninth coach in the 45-year history of NCAA hockey to reach
that level.

BGSU's first coach to reach the 250-win plateau, York has guided
the Falcons to three seasons of 30 or more wins, four CCHA
regular-season crowns, nine appearances in the CCHA Championships,
and six trips to the NCAA Tournament including the 1983-84 title
team. BGSU has won at least 20 games in all but three of York's
seasons at the helm of the Falcon program.

York has a 218-128-18 (.624) record in CCHA regular-season play
including a 29-16-1 ledger against the Broncos (33-18-11 overall).
Under York's tutelage, BG is 18-4-0 vs. WMU at the BGSU Ice Arena
and 11-12-1 at Lawson Arena.

WMU is coached by former Falcon assistant coach Bill Wilkinson,
who has led the Broncos to a 188-173-21 record over 10 seasons. He
owns a 16-21-1 mark against the Falcons including a 10-8-1 slate
in games played in Kalamazoo.

THE SERIES: BG leads the all-time series with WMU which began Feb.
27, 1970, by a 51-22-1 count. Friday's meeting will be the 75th in
the long rivalry between the two schools. The Falcons have won
six of the last 10 contests, but have found themselves on the short
end the last two games. BG is 31-6-0 at home vs. WMU and 19-14-1
in games played in Kalamazoo. The Brown and Orange maintains a
12-8 cushion in one-goal games; however, the Broncos hold a 5-3-1
advantage in affairs reaching overtime.

Last season, the two teams split their four games with each club
capturing a home-and-home series sweep. BG took the first two-game
set (5-1, 3-0) behind senior center Martin Jiranek's (Bashaw, Alta.)
three-goal performance. Junior netminder Angelo Libertucci (Toronto,
Ont.) was in goal for the Falcons' shutout win - BG's last victory
on the road (Nov. 24). WMU rebounded to claim the January series
by the scores of 4-2 each night.

LOOKING BACK AT MIAMI: For the first time since the Redskins and
Falcons have met on the ice, MU came away with a series victory
claiming three of a possible four points.

BG's loss in Oxford Friday snapped the Falcons' 11-game unbeaten
(10-0-1) string against the Red and White. BG freshman center
Brian Holzinger (Parma, Ohio) recorded the first multiple-goal game
of his career in the series opener. His power-play goal at 4:17
of the first period put the Falcons on the board first and his
short-handed tally just under nine minutes later gave BG a 2-1 lead
after 20 minutes of play.

MU scored the first two goals of the middle stanza to take its
first lead of the game before junior Rick Mullins (Utica, Mich.)
netted his second marker of the year to tie the contest.

MU held a 4-3 advantage heading into the final period, but senior
right wing Peter Holmes (Richmond, B.C.) erased the BG deficit just
10 seconds into the frame. However, the Redskins countered 3:23
later with what proved to be the game winner.

Libertucci continued to show improvement in the BG net making 35
saves. He also collected his first assist of the season (fifth of
his career) on Mullins' goal after stopping a three-on-one MU break.

After a scoreless first period in Saturday's rematch at BG, the
Redskins sandwiched goals around Holmes' second marker of the series
to take a 2-1 lead after two periods of play.

MU built its advantage to two 6:45 into the final session, but a
three-goal Falcon spurt sparked by Jiranek (two goals) and senior
right wing Dan Bylsma (Grand Haven, Mich.) put BG in front for the
first time in the contest. The Falcons' lead was shortlived,
however, as MU responded quickly to tie the game.

Libertucci again got the call in goal for the Falcons making 24
saves.

Jiranek, Holmes and sophomore rearguard Aris Brimanis (Shaker
Heights, Ohio) paced BG offensively over the weekend with three
points apiece. Junior center Brett Harkins (Cleveland, Ohio) also
added two assists to the Falcon cause.

CHECKING THE BRONCOS: WMU resumes play this weekend after splitting
with Michigan State two weeks ago.

Senior wing Keith Jones tops the Broncos in scoring with five goals
and 14 assists for 19 points. Sophomore wing Colin Ward (15 points)
is WMU's leading goal scorer with 11 including seven on the power
play (T-1st in the CCHA with UM's David Oliver).

Senior center Scott Garrow and junior forward Pat Ferschweiler are
the Brown and Gold's next highest point producers with 10 each on
two goals.

Freshman left wing Francois Leroux is third on the team in goal-scoring
production with four and leads the WMU rookie contingent in scoring
with eight points. Three of his goals have been game winners.

Seniors Andy Suhy (3-2--5), Brian Tulik (0-3--3) and Brad Dawson
(0-0--0), sophomore Derek Schooley (1-6--7) and freshman Brent
Brekke (1-2--3) are the Broncos' regulars on the blueline.

Sophomore Craig Brown has handled the majority of the workload in
the WMU goal. He owns a 4-3-1 record, and a fine 3.08 goals-against
average and an 89.3 saves percentage. Senior Rob Laurie and freshman
Brian Renfrew are his backups. Each has played in one game this
season with each registering victories.

The Bronco special teams rank very highly in the CCHA and have been
one reason for the team's early success. WMU's power-play is clicking
at a 25.0 percent rate (20 of 80), while its penalty-killing
entourage is thwarting 88.2 percent (82 of 83) of its opponents'
extra-man advantages.
