CCHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mike Whitton, a freshman right wing from Western
Michigan University, has been selected CCHA Player of the Week for the week
ending November 16, 1991.
Whitton, a 6-2, 210 forward from Scarborough, Ontario, had a hat trick in the
Broncos 4-2 win against Ferris State on Friday. After Western Michigan fell
behind 2-0, Whitton scored once in the opening period cutting the Bulldog lead
to 2-1. Whitton scored a power play marker early in the middle stanza and
then the game-winner with just 14 seconds left in the second period for the
"natural" hat trick.
Whitton, a 21-year old freshman finished the weekend with a plus/minus rating
of +2. The goals were the first of his collegiate career.

Miami - George Gwozdecky has an overall mark of 89-86-9 in six years, with a
22-56-7 mark at Miami in his third season. LSSU - Jeff Jackson has a two-year
mark of 43-7-4. Series: The Lakers have a 32-6-4 lead in the series which
began in 1979. LSSU won all four games last year. Last Meeting: Jan. 25-26
at Miami, LSSU won 4-2 and 10-3. Tim Harris had four goals in the 10-3 Laker
win. Last Meeting at LSSU: Dec. 7-8, 1990, the Lakers won 6-1 and 9-2. Doug
Weight and John Hendry each had three goals in the series.
UIC at Michigan, Nov. 22-23 at Michigan's Yost Arena (7,206). Saturday's game
will be taped by PASS and aired on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Coaches: UIC - Larry
Pedrie has compiled a 14-27-3 mark in his second season. MICH - Red Berenson
has compiled a 147-134-16 overall mark in his eighth season at Michigan.
Series: Michigan leads 20-13-1 in the all-time series, including winning all

Last Meeting: Mar. 1-2 at Kalamazoo in the CCHA Quarterfinals, the Broncos
swept the Spartans by scores of 4-3 and 4-2. Bill Shalawylo (MSU), Dwayne
Norris (MSU) and Keith Jones (WMU) all had two goals in the series. Last
Meeting at MSU: Jan. 26, Western Michigan won 8-1 behind two goals each from
Colin Ward and Byron Witkowski.

FSU - Bob Mancini has a 24-20-6 mark in his second season as head coach of the

Four CCHA players on Pre-Olympic team rosters: Former Lake Superior defenseman
Dan Keczmer is a member of the U.S. Olympic team. Keczmer has six assists in
19 games played. Jason Woolley, who would have been a senior at Michigan State
this year, has eight goals and 13 assists while playing in all 31 games for
Canada's National Team. His teammates include former Wolverine Todd Brost
(7-11-18 in 31 games) and former Falcon blueliner Kevin Dahl (0-4-4 in 17

Lake Superior netminders strong in split at Munn: Laker junior goalie Darrin
Madeley and freshman Blaine Lacher combined allowed just two goals in a weekend
split at Michigan State. Madeley allowed just one goal in Friday's 1-0 to the
Spartans. He made 23 saves which included stopping six breakaways. In
Saturday's 3-1 Lake Superior victory, Madeley made three saves on four shots
in just over 15 minutes, before giving way to Lacher, who turned aside 18
shots to earn the win. MSU went 0-for-12 on the power play.
Michigan continues win streak over the Redskins: Following their weekend
sweep in Oxford, the Michigan Wolverines have now won nine straight vs. Miami
and are 16-0-1 in the last 17 meetings between the two schools.
Lake Superior knocked from first place: After being in first place for 364
days, LSSU dropped to second place following their split in East Lansing. The
shutout loss on Friday was the first blanking of a Laker squad in 230 games
(1986 CCHA Consolation game to Bowling Green was the last time).
Flames offense supplied by rookies: UIC moved into a three-way tie for
seventh place with their 10-1 win at Bowling Green Saturday night. Of the 10
Flame goals, six were scored by freshman led by Mark Zdan's two lamp-lighters.
Other frosh to light the lamp were Derek Knorr, Jim Richardson, Chris MacDonald
and Bob Gohde. Of the four players to notch just one goal, it was the first
collegiate goal for each one. Zdan leads UIC with four goals on the season.
