I saw parts of Maine-BU in between periods of AIC-MC and after our game
ended; Maine appeared to outplay BU and outshot them by a 2-1 margin
including something like 17-4 in the third, but BU got the game-winner
with about 20 seconds left on a shorthanded goal by freshman Mike
Prendergast.

The score really tells it all. The last time these two teams played was
in 1989-90, Merrimack's inaugural season in Hockey East, and in that game
AIC rebounded from a 6-2 deficit late in the third to tie it up at 6-6
including three goals in the final 1:04. But AIC, which had a decent team
that year, had very few of the same players back this time around and none
of the great scorers that their 1989-90 team had. Also, Merrimack was
more than aware of the trouble AIC has caused them in the past; AIC also
handed Merrimack one of its only two losses in Division II play from
1986-89 (Union being the other). Add to that the fact that Ron Anderson
was clearly unhappy with his team's overall play through the first six
games, making sure the players knew it, and you had the makings of a
blowout between two unevenly matched teams.
The best thing about this game from Merrimack's standpoint was that the
team played three solid and dominating periods against a team they should
have beaten. Shots were 47-15, but 10 of AIC's 15 shots on goal came
during their 6 power play attempts - no goals. Merrimack continued its
dominance on the power play, going 3 for 4, and is now 18 for 40 overall
on the season for 45.0% to lead Hockey East. AIC's only goal made it
8-1 with 4:08 left in the second and came when Erik Forselius
deflected a shot from the point by Mike Hall past Mike Doneghey.
The Warriors were led by Rob Kelley, who has bounced back and forth
between defense and forward. Tonight he started on left wing and scored
four goals. Dan Gravelle chipped in with two first-period goals and an
assist to run his totals to 6-12--18 in 7 games. Gravelle remains
overshadowed by Agostino Casale, the leading scorer in Hockey East, who
added a goal and two assists to give him 11-11--22 for 3.14 points per
game.
Casale took the role of playmaker tonight despite entering the game with
the most goals in Division I. He did score one, but he also passed up
two great scoring chances to feed Gravelle and to help highly-touted
freshman Matt Adams score his first goal, Adams' first point in 7 games.
Adams has been off to a rough start after beginning the season on the top
line, but recently he has had great opportunities in each of his last
four games only to be robbed by the opposing goalie. Confidence has
seemed to be a problem for the rookie who has worked hard with nothing
thus far to show, but Merrimack hopes that finally getting on the board
will calm the kid down and let him get into the swing of things. The
Warriors are already averaging more goals than any other team in Hockey
East, and the addition of Adams to the scoring fold can only make their
already potent offense even better.
Also worth mentioning are John Barron, who had 2-2--4, and Brendan Locke,
who played a fine all-around game in notching a goal while assisting on
Kelley's 2nd and 3rd goals.
Merrimack travels to Boston College on Tuesday night for a rematch of
their earlier game which BC won 3-1. AIC plays at Salem State on
Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets finish 0-2 in their only two DivI
contests of the season, losing last week to Army 6-2.
