Isn't this an ECAC rule and not an NCAA rule?  I don't think it has anything
to do with division, either.  I know of several DivII or DivIII schools
(classified as such by the NCAA) who have DivI hockey programs that stepped
on the ice back in the first week of October.
 
I hope this doesn't mean Union won't be prepared to play Merrimack on Nov 1;
I was looking forward to a good game between two former DivII rivals who
have made the step up to DivI.
