Colorado College maintains its 7 point lead in the WCHA with a 4-2 win
over Alaska Anchorage. The game was closer than the score indicates, and
some good hockey was played.
The game started off at a fast pace, as the Tigers came out shooting
immediately. A few Seawolves, like Todd Bethard, were able to get some
good shots off during the period as well. Goaltending and defense played
well, though, as nothing went in.
At 9:13 of the second, Colin Schmidt put CC on the board with the first
of 2 power play goals on the night for CC. The lead was short-lived,
however, as Stacy Prevost scored for Anchorage 1:12 later to tie it up.
The Tigers got a fluke goal late in the period, at 14:29, when Calvin
Elfring centered the puck and it bounced off the skate of a Seawolf
defenseman and past Schill's pads into the net. CC ended the period leading
2-1.
Midway through the third, while the Tigers were killing a charging
penalty to Ryan Reynard, Jay McNeill was taken down and had to be attended
to and helped off the ice. Luckily he was ok, and was able to play some
more in the game. On the resulting power play for CC, Peter Geronazzo widened
the lead to 2. The game was far from over, though. Anchorage pulled to within
one at 18:03, when Jeremy Mylymok scored. Schill was pulled for the extra
attacker, but instead an empty-netter was scored by Chad Remackel to seal the
game with 45 seconds left. Jay McNeill thought he had also gotten an
empty-netter 20 seconds later, but it was denied due to offsides.
Same two teams tomorrow night, as the Tigers hope for a road sweep to
increase their lead. They need to win only 6 more games to clinch the
MacNaughton Cup for the second consecutive year.
