Summary:

Cornell came out with a 4-1 win at Union on Friday night. The big
story of the game has to be the 37-save performance by the Big Red's
freshman goalie, Jason Elliot. The game was much closer than the
final score sounds. 2 of Cornell's goals came right at the end of the
game.

Union had the better chances in the scoreless first. The defense on
both ends was playing well. The second period was controlled by
Cornell early on, with the Big Red getting a few very good chances.
Jake Karam gave Cornell a 1-0 lead on a one-timer at 3:59. Union came
right back and scored the tying goal 2 minutes later on Andrew Will's
5th of the year. The Dutchmen went on to dominate most of the 2nd
period, and had some great chances stopped by Elliot. Elliot saved 19
of the 20 shots he faced in the period. Cornell took themselves out
of a few opportunities midway through the second. One 2-on-1 in the
middle of 2nd was shot right up into the press box instead of taking
the pass to the open man, and soon after, a Cornell breakaway was
completely botched, giving the Dutchmen defense time to get back into
the play, and a shot was never taken. Cornell finally broke the tie
with a huge goal in the final minute of the second by Geoff Lopatka.
So all the Dutchmen had to show for their great effort in the 2nd was
a 2-1 deficit.

Union had more great chances in the third, including a breakaway shot
by Troy Stevens that was forced wide and a few unbelievable
point-blank saves by Elliot. Even, so you have to credit the Cornell
defense for breaking up a lot of Union's offensive rushes. Union had
a terrible time breaking the puck into the zone. There were probably
at least 5 offsides calls on Union trying to break in during the 3rd.
The Big Red put the game away on Karam's second goal with just over a
minute left, and topped it off with an empty-netter (which was an
impressive hard shot from center ice) again by Karam to complete his
hat trick.

The loss was a tough one for Union, as Cornell is one of the teams
near Union in the standings. Combine that with Colgate's win over
RPI, and the Dutchmen face the possibility of falling deeper in the
standings if they can't beat Colgate tonight. The Dutchmen's 3-game
winning streak over Cornell was also stopped, and Union's winless
streak now stands at 7 games. Union's record stands at 1-4-2 in the
ECAC, and 4-7-2 overall. Cornell is 2-3-2 in the league and 3-6-2
overall.
