Background: Woog started his hockey career at South St. Paul High
School, where he was a three-time all-state selection.
 
From there he accepted an athletic scholarship to the University
of Minnesota and played under legendary head coach John Mariucci. As
a junior center, Woog received All-America honors and, as a senior,
he was the team's captain and Most Valuable Performer.
 
Woog started teaching at Hopkins West Junior High School, where
he instructed geography and coached the football and hockey teams. He
then moved back to South St. Paul High School and became the head
soccer coach and an assistant for the hockey and baseball teams.
 
Woog then coached the St. Paul Vulcans junior hockey league team from
1971-1977 and directed them to two national titles.
 
After three years as head coach of the South St. Paul High hockey
team, and one year as the assistant for the 1984 Olympic team, he
took over the helm of Gophers hockey.
 
At Minnesota, Woog has a streak of nine consecutive NCAA tournament
appearances and nine consecutive finishes among the WCHA's top two
teams in league play. Woog's teams have also appeared in five NCAA
Final Four tournaments.
