From the AHL mailing list's Dan Sullivan:

I have seen a few posts from people looking for news on Steve Shields since
he has come to the Rochester Americans club. In the Sunday Democrat & Chronicle
an article on Shields was written. This is Kevin Oklobzija's weekly article
on the Amerks:

"The numbers for Steve Shields are downright ugly, but for now, the rookie
goaltender will stay with the Rochester Americans.

The organization's hockey minds met this week to discuss what would be best
for Shields: staying in Rochester, or going to a lower league to play a lot of
games, which would hasten his developement.

They decided it was best that he remain an Amerk.

Shields, the NCAA's career victory leader(111) after a four-year career at
the University of Michigan, is 0-5-0 as a pro. He has a 6.53 goals-against
average and .775 save percentage.

His best performance was in Albany Nov. 9, when he lost 5-2 but allowed only
one questionable goal and made some big saves.

'We looked long and hard at what would be best for him and decided he should
stay in Rochester,' said Larry Carriere, director of player evaluation for the
parent Buffalo Sabres.

'It's a big adjustment coming here. We thing it's best that he have the
opportunity to play at this level and practice every day at this level.'

Goaltending coach Mitch Korn has been working with Shields on a numbertechnical things, including trying to keep the 6'3", 210 pound goalie on hfeet.

'He knows he has a lot to work on and that's why Mitch will be here a lot,'
Carriere said. 'But he's a competitor; he wants to do anything he can to stop
the puck, and that's something you can't teach.'"
