Having attended several games in the Barn, I feel the need to comment on
this subject. Mike asked what happened to Ohio State hockey since they
used to be quite successful in the CCHA. My best guess is that the
Buckeyes lost their recruiting edge. With schools like Bowling Green and
Illinios-Chicago so close and with such beautiful facilities in which to
play, it is difficult for Ohio State to lure the blue-chip players.

At any rate, it is my feeling that if Ohio State were to build a new ice
rink, the Bucks would regain their recruiting edge and do every bit as
well as a Michigan or Western Michigan in the CCHA. Further, I think it
is a mistake to blame the Buckeye's woes on Coach Welsh. He has been the
team's only advocate and has been fighting for several years to get the
team on the sthletic department's agenda for upgrading of the facilities
(as long as I have been here - since 1985.) It was Welsh who engineered
the two games at the Fairgrounds Coleseum last season. Welsh even went on
public radio to promote the event. I think he has gone way above and
beyond and accomplished more with less than many could ever hope.
