The local paper ran an AP article today on the opening of bids on the
new recreational sports center to be built at UNH. According to AP,
the allotted amount of $19 million was exceeded by bids that ranged from
20% to 40% more.

The apparent low bid was $22.75 million, with the high bid at $26.225
million. In the article, Victor Azzi, UNH associate professor and
campus planner, said they expected bids to be even higher. He said
that he plans to make a recommendation Thursday to two subcommittees
of the Board of Trustees with the full board to take up the issue in
October.

The completion date has been set for September 30, 1995. Plans called
for a 6,000 seat Olympic-sized hockey rink that would also have a
removable floor for basketball and other events, which would bring the
seating to 7,000. According to AP, Mr Azzi said that the Health
Education and Health Facilities Administration has approved $13.8
million in low-interest tax-free bonds to be issued by the State of
New Hampshire. The bonds would be paid off by revenue from events at
the arena, and other funding is slated to come from student fees and
gifts.

The UNH hockey team has planned to play all of its 1994-95 home games
at rinks in Manchester, NH, and Portland, ME.
