IMHO, Jim Montgomery was the best hockey player ever to play at Maine.
Even better then Paul Kariya. The reason I say this is he provided a level of
leadership that Paul couldn't bring to the team the following year. I can
recall Jim being real hard on team mates who took dumb penalties. Peter Ferriro
got his butt chewed more then once for retaliating and picking up a stupid
penalty. Anyone who would like to see the type of character Jim was at Maine
try to get a copy of "Out of the Woods" this video highlights what Jim ment to
Maine.
The writer who pointed out that Maine should retire his number I agree
Jim was one of a kind. Also as he stood helping Paul hold the H.B. award high
you could see his heart was crushed. He would never say he was more deserving
of the H.B. then Paul, but everyone I know thought he was or atleast deserving
to be a co-winner.
The only draw back Jim has is the same as Paul Kariya, they are both
only about 5' 10" tall. However, Paul has those Gretsky like moves and Jim has
the build of a guy 6'10", he's real soild for a small foward. His first year
in the minors was a very good one as I recall he held his own with the best at
that level. The HABs have a Red Aurbauch (spell?) like feel for finding over
looked talent... I think they just did it again!
I wish him the best... even if it is with the HABs.
